What is PRP/PRF?
PRP/PRF stands for platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin. PRP/PRF is a cosmetic treatment that uses a person’s own blood to release growth factors to promote collagen and elastin production. Platelets are very small cell fragments in the blood that the body uses for clotting. When PRP/PRF is microneedled into the skin it causes a mild inflammatory response that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets are arranged and organized in the tissue, they release several enzymes and growth factors that promote healing and tissue restoration. The addition of PRP/PRF to microneedling promotes collagen and elastin production, decreases downtime, and improves healing.
How the PRP/PRF Procedure Works
The treatment area is numbed with a topical numbing cream prior to treatment and a small quantity of blood is then drawn from the patient’s vein. The blood is then spun down in a special centrifuge to separate its components which include red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. The platelet-rich plasma or platelet-rich fibrin is then separated from the rest of the blood and drawn up to be microneedled into the skin.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure that uses an automated pen device with a sterile needle cartridge to create thousands of micro-injuries to the skin. These micro-injuries initiate the healing cascade and over time, have been shown to induce collagen and elastin production thus improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, and scarring.
Clinical studies have shown that four microneedling treatments spaced 1 month apart can stimulate up to 400% collagen and elastin production and deposition 6 months after treatment. Microneedling can also help with hyperpigmentation, uneven texture, and pore size.
